Sssidney in Sspringtime..

I recently found my copy of Young Death. It had been an age since I had seen it and I had forgotten how good it was.

So here's young Sidney in all his grown-up, putrid & pallid loveliness.

Spring Clean!

I just got my new office/bolthole/nest built and I have been moving all my stuff in.

So I thought it was about time I had a look to see what I had I could post up here.

New Year 2008

I just realised that I haven't posted anything here in such an age. To remedy that quickly here's one I put my hand on (oo-er, missus!!).

Time to scobe some more from me blinkin' hard drive I think.

Skullhedd

Well - today's the day the young Nuffling is due but still no sign. Mrs Nuff taking it easy & I'm nose-deep in Photoshop trying to pretend everything's normal.

I coloured this entirely in PS for a change. I tend to veer towards staying in Illustrator so it's good to take a new tack.

Update

An update on the previous posting.
There was an excellent programme on telly just now celebrating the birthday of Helvetica.
Many happy returns, you typey old type!!

Character concepts

Some more characters put together from thumbnails. See? This is what happens when you leave pencils & paper lying around.

Another scribbling

It's now only 2 weeks until the arrival of baby nuff. I have given myself a couple of weeks off work to prepare. The joy of self employment is you can wrap the boss round your little finger!!

So here is a little scribble I put together to keep my hand in as it were.

The Big House

I have a commission I'm working on at the moment to produce a backdrop for a puppet show showing Stormont, the Parliament building here on The Oul' Sod.

Here are the preparatory line drawings.

The 'Wonder' Stuff

It has been so long since I posted anything on here. I'm having a rummage through my Documents to find out what I have been doing.

Wonder Woman was a little piece I did whilst procrastinating over some caricature commissions I have to do.

Captain Wonder is the creation of another pencil jockey here on the Oul' Sod. The strip is very well written and a great read. I was asked by the artist to have a go at inking some of the panels and this was my first sample to him. Look out for this strip.

Robohead

It's a wet Saturday afternoon here on the Oul' Sod. I'm working tonight (caricature work) so I thoght I'd get the creative juices flowing.

This one was drawn from scratch in Illustrator (though granted I threw down a rough thumbnail in pencil to try out the idea first) with a few finishing details in Photoshop.

Hellboy

Today was the first night of the Final Year show at the local Art College here on the Oul' Sod. I hadn't set foot there in about 20 years since my time there. It was great to go back.

In the Design Dept I met a some former classmates - most of whom had returned there is a tutoring capacity. It certainly brought back good memories of good times with some good people.

I felt suitably inspired to finish off this one when I came back. I had sketched it out & started it off this afternoon. It's my first go at Big Red.

Sooner

And here what kept me nose-deep in the computer for a while this afternoon. Sure that's what Sunday afternoons are for.

Summertime

Well - in anticipation of the glorious summer we're promised here is a li'l piece I worked up.

I had been posting the work in progress over at The Drawing Board. I seem to have used up my upload limit so here is the finished article with a few stages along the way.

Profile

Here's a doodle I worked up after gleaning some inspiration surfing A LOT of blogs I have saved to my favourites.

There is so much good stuff out there on the informationsuperhighway. Thankfully artists seem to be wresting control of this splendid medium from the clutches of geekery.

Gruff Sketch

It's a goat.

That's it.

Hulk Smash

Forgot to post this one last month. Been busy with caricature work.
It's the Hulk... Smashing...

Illustrator nonsense

I was browsing some other blogs & got inspired to draw this without using linework as I usually do. Just a quick exercise.

Skins

Today's outing. Some social commentators. Unfinished but it is now after midnight & I have to drive to the airport tomorrow morning.

Munkee Fun

Mr Reink brought me back a pile of my old pencil drawings he had found around his studio. I thought one was worth a revisit. So here he is - Monkey Moo Maxwell!!

More Illustrator fun today. This time with a strictly limited pallette.

Happy New Year 2007

A very happy new year to any & all visitors to these boards.

I am trying to hit the ground running this year so with the best will in the world I intend to post regularly. Here are my first renditions of the year.

Halloween Illo

A little vector drawing I did for the witching season. Unfortunately (as usual) life got in the way of me posting it on time. C'est la guerre, I suppose.

It's me

Having a small day today so I started this little self portrait.

Sooper small & furry

Found this li'l critter on my pc so up (up and away) he goes!

Sooper hero

Some more work I have done but didn't manage to get round to putting on my blog. I think a concerted effort to tighten up my regime is needed!!

Some more work

I didn't realise how long it has been since I posted more work. Must be more attentive as the Autumn nights draw in.

Big Brother 2006

I admit it. I'm an addict. I thoroughly enjoy this annual spectacle. I see it as a modern version of the ancient roman games. I have no compunction in hurling vitriol at these media whores who sign up each year for the fight to the death. Or bitch to the death as it is this year. Send in the lions I say.

The early runaway winner this year seems to be Pete. Despite his Tourettes he talks more sense than the rest put together. And despite his chosen arena, he seems like a very likeable bloke.

Pete is himself a cartoonist. So by way of support I want to post this.

C'mon, wee man!!

More Illustrator & Photoshop jollies.

The Joke's Over

16 May 2006

Here is another illo put together as a break from work. I have several commissions on the go at the minute and some some proposals I've been asked for on caricaturing events throughout the summer here on the Oul' Sod. Impending wanton superhero violence is my way of relaxing.

Gotham Nights

Been networking today I building up my contacts list.

Also managed to sell my old car registration for £150. (the car's probably not worth that).

Anyway, here is the man made completely out of bats. It's interesting how dark the sketch looks on my PC monitor. It was drawn on the Mac & I use an old 21'' monitor with it. The colours are a lot more subtle there.

Supes

A work in progress. I haven't drawn the Man of Steet before so I wanted to try a head & shoulders study.

The Black Coat.

On The Drawing Board website, Francesco Francavilla, a most talented individual, posted an Open Thread inviting contributors to post their take on his character The Black Coat. His comic has gone to press & I wish him well.

So here is my interpretation. All in Illustrator.

13 April 2006

It's late. It's always late when I turn to my blog.

Truth to tell I have had a lot of work on lately. I have been preparing tonight for a work meeting tomorrow which I hope will be fruitful.

I'll just post this work in progress. She is Ellen. This is my gift to her. At present she is on the other side of the world with doting mum & dad.
